Deep Listening® is a creative philosophy and practice that encompasses sound and music, movement, and dream work. Listening is at its core. The practice is rooted in the life’s work of the American composer and musician Pauline Oliveros, in collaboration with IONE and Heloise Gold. Through daily combinations of movement exercises, sound performance, and dream work, the group delves deeper into listening and collaborative processes. Throughout the week, there will be space for collaborative creation as well as individual creative work and writing. The workshop is designed for anyone interested in exploring and developing creativity collectively and individually with sound, music, dreams, and movements.
The course is led by Sharon Stewart (NL/US) and Björn Eriksson, both certified Deep Listening instructors who have studied under Pauline Oliveros.
MORE ABOUT THE COURSE LEADERS
SHARON STEWART studied piano at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Faculty of Music, and later completed a Masters in Music Pedagogy at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague. She has a private piano practice in Arnhem; is engaged as a sound designer in various dance, theater, and installation projects; serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Sonic Studies; and is currently an independent researcher for the Professorship Theory in the Arts at ArtEZ University of the Arts in the Netherlands. Sharon Stewart was certified in Deep Listening® with Pauline Oliveros, IONE, and Heloise Gold in 2011 and is currently a core teacher in the international, online Deep Listening Intensives offered by The Center for Deep Listening, RPI.
BJÖRN ERIKSSON is a sound improviser, sound designer, sound engineer, composer, and teacher. He has been playing and working with sound and music since childhood. At the age of four, he started creating cluster music and prepared piano works as an act of play. At ten, he received a reel-to-reel tape recorder as a birthday gift, stimulating and continuing his act of playing and listening. Since then, he has been on a path of exploring sound in performance, electronic music, and more. Björn plays with Great Learning Orchestra, Norrbotten Improvisers Orchestra, Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, and in other constellations and solo.
